1. Reasonable crack widths for reinforced concrete under service loads are listed in Table of ACI R However, a footnote warns that, with time, “a significant portion” of the cracks in a structure can exceed these values. Commentary Provision R of ACI discusses flexural reinforcement for one-way slabs and beams.

2. Cracks in concrete can also form due to expansion caused by rusting of steel embedded in concrete. In reinforced concrete, corrosion cause formation of rust around the steel bars which is as big as two to four times the original volume of steel.

3. The cracks form because while the concrete is drying, its volume is being reduced. The condition of the concrete is restrained, so instead of just shortening the slab or member length, cracks form throughout to allow the reduction in volume (Emmons , p. 30). This kind of crack is depicted below in Figure 6.

7. Aug 17,  · Drying Shrinkage. This is the main cause of cracking in hardened concrete. This cracking takes place near the restraints due to volume changes in the concrete. When concrete is exposed to moisture it swells and when it is exposed to air with relatively low humidity it shrinks.
